Voice Over in Kansas City

Published 6 years ago - 0 Comments

Twenty-some years ago I left the acting profession to raise a daughter. My devotion to theatre was replaced by devotion to family. That daughter grew up and she is now on her own. Along the way, my wife and I had four more children. We live on a 3-acre spot near the woods. I record in a small studio next to the house with an isolation booth I built myself.

I approach your script – whether a commercial, training or educational video, or video game characters – as a storyteller in the tradition of Garrison Keillor and Paul Harvey: I aim to get to heart of your message.

As a Native North American English speaker, I can offer you expressive and clear diction, pronunciation and enunciation. As a boy I lived in Germany and traveled in Europe & U.K. and finished schooling in the heart of the Mid-West, near Kansas City, Missouri. These experiences trained my ear for accents and inflections. I’m a non-union voice over performer with university, conservatory, & professional acting experience.

It’s not easy to describe a voice, especially your own. People have said I sound like Jon Hamm and Jason Bateman and Jim Caviezel. But any compliments like that you must take with a grain of salt.

I try to sound like Darth Vader when I say to my sons, “Join me, and together we shall rule the galaxy!” But they don’t believe it and neither do I.

My voice has an expressive range that centers on spoken baritone / tenor suited for an emotional storyteller, as well as education and e-Learning, ESL English second language, narration, and phone messages.

You’ll find my voice to be like the guy next door, your next door neighbor, explaining how to fix a lawn mower, like a professor from your favorite class, and like a dad telling the kids to “keep it down back there!”

But don’t forget that I’m classically trained, so if you need more sophistication, I can do that too.

What most clients ask for is neutral American English without accent. I can also give you:

  • Western: cowboy
  • Mid-west: slight or deep Ozark hillbilly
  • Southern: slight or genteel
  • Transatlantic: like old-time movies

In addition, because of my years of experience in technology, I’m at ease with technical instruction, business presentation, corporate video, white board video, and other types of explainer video. I’ve read a lot of it and learned how to make it interesting with my voice. If you need to make your dry tech training come alive…
